Creative Café

Are you looking for a way to tie Faith into your language arts instruction?

Check out Creative Café!

Creative Café is a workshop-style learning experience that combines Faith, music, poetry, stories, and art. Each workshop is centered around a meaningful theme, and its content can be tailored to introduce children to ideas that are good, True, and beautiful.

Use Creative Café to make learning joyful, memorable, and, most importantly, to encourage children to use their creativity to glorify God!

Ready to get started? Here are three essentials for creating a memorable experience!

NOTEBOOKS

Every student will need a dedicated writing notebook. Students can personalize their notebooks with pictures or stickers. I recommend a composition notebook for young writers and a lined journal notebook for older writers (my favorite is the Cagie lined journal notebook from Amazon). You can call the notebook your writer’s notebook or commonplace book. Call it what you wish, but make sure your students know they can add to it whenever an idea strikes. Read more about designing and dedicating your notebook on my blog!

MUGS

Another way to enhance the Creative Café experience is to allow each student to choose a “Creative Café mug.” This mug should be a coffee mug that speaks to the student’s personality or passions. Each student should fill the mug with sharpened pencils and colored pencils. Students may also wish to add other utensils such as colorful pens, calligraphy pens, and paintbrushes. Create a space to store the mugs and invite students to grab their mugs at the start of Creative Café. Alternatively, canvas pencil pouch bags or wooden pencil boxes can also be decorated with artwork to express each student’s personality and passions.

MUSIC & REFRESHMENTS

If possible, work in a space with comfortable seating. Put on some light coffee shop music and consider offering simple refreshments. For home educators, consider using a menu to offer refreshment choices!

Ready for the next step? Use a creative menu to tie everything together!

It wouldn't be a café without a menu!

Teachers used to ask me, "How do you get your students to love creative writing so much?"

One way I would inspire children to love writing is by modeling it myself. Another way was to offer my students creative menus with a variety of options. Free choice and meaningful options are key ingredients!

All of my workshops offer detailed menus that give children the independence to write about topics and ideas that are meaningful to them.
